Little Comets to headline Split Christmas show PDF Print E-mail

ImageOn the 15th December, a star won't be guiding the journeys of the wise folk of Sunderland. It'll be a comet. A little one at that.

Following on from the success of Split Festival 2012, the team behind The North East's premier contemporary music festival are proud to announce a special, one off, Christmas gig, to be held at The Sunderland Minster.

Headlining the festivities and bringing the Christmas cheer will be the North East's very own Little Comets. Continuing Split's quest to showcase up and coming local talent, they'll be joined on the bill by some more of the region's most exciting, emerging local talent, all to be announced at a later date.

Since forming in 2008, Little Comets have been weaving their trademark intricate afro-beat rhythms with spikey indie guitars and heartfelt melodic vocals to great effect, building a sizable following in the process. After the release of their debut album, 2010's In Search of Elusive Little Comets, the band have continued to grow and develop from strength to strength.

In between releasing their second album, Life is Elsewhere, and touring the UK, this year saw the band perform their biggest shows to date, as part of The Olympic Torch Relay Celebrations. The gig, which took place a day before the Olympics opening ceremony saw Little Comets play to over 100,000 in London's Hyde Park and share a bill with Dizzee Rascal, Friendly Fires and Mark Ronson, amongst others.

Now, though, they're all set to return to their native North East to see off the year in style. Little Comets front man and vocalist Rob Coles had this to say: "We were delighted to be asked to play this festive gig for the organisers of Split Festival - an event which we have enjoyed playing in the past due in no small part to the emphasis it places on supporting artists and artisans from across the region."

Split Festival organiser Martyn McFadden added: "It's been a great year for Little Comets. As a band they've progressed so much and their audiences have grown, not just playing to hundreds of thousands of people at Hyde Park as part of the Olympic celebrations, but their last UK tour saw them step up to academy size venues throughout the country. We thought they were the perfect choice to headline our Christmas gig in Sunderland's beautiful Minster, and it was also the perfect opportunity to celebrate the success of yet another great North East band."

Keeping with the spirit of Christmas a festive fayre of food and drink will be supplied by Sunderland gourmet deli, Juniper's Pantry and the night will be rounded off by a DJ set from Frankie & The Heartstrings.

Tickets are priced at a reasonable 10 in advance, or 12 on the door, and are on sale now from Split's ticket site here, or in store at Hot Rats and ALS.
